Mars Hole
-under detection-

Disclaimer

I've subjected this picture through various filters and lighting techniques. I have concluded that this is definitely not a shadow. Due to limited enhancement, pixelation, governmental cover-up, national security and ''public'' resolution, you'll have to decide what it is, for yourself.

Note: The hole Ron is referring to appears to be a legitimate depression in the topography, not any kind of image artifact. You can see the surrounding terrain actually "overflows" into the crater. There is no ejecta blanket, indicating it is a collapse or puncture feature, not an impact crater. And it is very circular. -- MB

Surface Tubes: Small, individual lava streams sometimes crust over, and then drain to form lava tubes on the surface of the surrounding ground. These can sometimes be identified as ridges radiating from known eruptive centers. On Earth, tubes of this type tend to be small. Their Martian counterparts could well be much larger.

Rift Tubes: These lava tubes offer the most variety in shape and size due to the fact that they are dependent upon forces other than just the flowing lava. Rift tubes form as lava flows down an existing rift. As a result, the tubes take on attributes of the rift itself. Many times, subsequent flows can pile up on top of one another resulting in multi-level lava tubes.

*Even though there's no visual evidence that the Mars Hole
was formed by lava, ''Habitat'' is an interesting concept worth exploring anyway.
